MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) sensor is a miniature device that integrates microscopic mechanical and electrical components on a single silicon chip. These sensors can detect physical or chemical changes—such as pressure, motion, temperature, or gas concentration—and convert them into electrical signals for measurement and analysis.
In gas detection applications, MEMS sensors typically use a sensitive layer that reacts when specific gas molecules are present. For example, the target gas interacts with the sensing material, causing changes in properties like electrical resistance, capacitance, or resonant frequency. The MEMS structure detects these changes and translates them into a digital or analog output. This allows for real-time, accurate monitoring of gases such as hydrogen (H₂), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), or ammonia (NH₃).
